The new UK strain of the novel Coronavirus has been confirmed in Jamaica, after 4 samples of the 20 positives from the recent United Kingdom (UK) flight to the island returned positive of the strain that is now taking over the UK.
This was announced by Health and Wellness(MOHW) Minister Dr Christopher Tufton during a live broadcast on Saturday.
The positive samples were sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) for further evaluation after 20 passengers returned positive when they arrived on December 21 from the UK.
Jamaica has since imposed a travel restriction on the UK which was on Friday extended to January 31.
Passengers from the flight were quarantined and tested, and 20 passengers from the flight tested positive for the disease. The samples were sent to CARPHA for further evaluation.
Dr Tufton said the health officials have no evidence to suggest that the new strain is in the general population.
